At just 23 years old, Hermann Upmann arrived in Havana and chose to remain, inspired by the booming Cuban cigar trade. He founded a bank and a cigar factory—both under his name. Though the bank folded in 1922, the cigar brand endured and became a global success.
H. Upmann cigars gained early recognition for their smooth, elegant flavour and meticulous construction. By the late 1800s, the brand had earned 14 gold medals for quality, and was named Provider to the Court of King Alfonso XII of Spain. Global Reach & Enduring Legacy
Since 1850, H. Upmann cigars have been distributed in Britain by Hunters & Frankau, a partnership that became crucial after World War I. The Upmann family’s role in aiding German espionage led to U.S. sanctions and the company’s bankruptcy. In 1925, Hunters & Frankau acquired the brand, reviving production and safeguarding its future.
One of the brand’s most famous fans? President John F. Kennedy, who had his aide buy up every available box of his favorite “Petit Upmann” just hours before signing the Cuban embargo into law.

Today, every H. Upmann cigar is handmade using Tripa Larga (long-filler tobacco) from Cuba’s famed Vuelta Abajo region. The blend is light-to-medium in strength and noted for its creamy, airy flavor and exceptional consistency across vitolas.
