H. Upmann cigars are among the most historic and refined of all Cuban cigar brands. Founded in 1844 by German banker Hermann Upmann, the brand’s origin was born from a twist of fate—and a chance conversation on a transatlantic voyage. What followed was the creation of one of the most celebrated names in the world of cigars, with a legacy still enjoyed by aficionados today.
A Storied History Rooted in Excellence
At just 23 years old, Hermann Upmann arrived in Havana and chose to remain, inspired by the booming Cuban cigar trade. He founded a bank and a cigar factory—both under his name. Though the bank folded in 1922, the cigar brand endured and became a global success.
H. Upmann cigars gained early recognition for their smooth, elegant flavour and meticulous construction. By the late 1800s, the brand had earned 14 gold medals for quality, and was named Provider to the Court of King Alfonso XII of Spain. These accolades remain proudly displayed on cigar boxes to this day.
Global Reach & Enduring Legacy
Since 1850, H. Upmann cigars have been distributed in Britain by Hunters & Frankau, a partnership that became crucial after World War I. The Upmann family’s role in aiding German espionage led to U.S. sanctions and the company’s bankruptcy. In 1925, Hunters & Frankau acquired the brand, reviving production and safeguarding its future.
One of the brand’s most famous fans? President John F. Kennedy, who had his aide buy up every available box of his favorite “Petit Upmann” just hours before signing the Cuban embargo into law.
Craftsmanship & Construction
Today, every H. Upmann cigar is handmade using Tripa Larga (long-filler tobacco) from Cuba’s famed Vuelta Abajo region. The blend is light-to-medium in strength and noted for its creamy, airy flavor and exceptional consistency across vitolas.
Vitola: Mareva (42 ring gauge × 5 ⅛”) Flavour: Butter, coffee, leather Time: ~35 minutes Notes: Presented in retro-style tins since 2019, perfect for travel and gifting.
H. Upmann Magnum 54
Vitola: Robusto (54 × 4 ¾”) Flavour: Cream, cedar, subtle spice Time: ~50 minutes Notes: Among the brand’s largest formats, often available in tubos for portability.
Since its elevation to Global Brand status in 2006 by Habanos S.A., H. Upmann has received renewed attention and admiration. While it may not release as many special editions as brands like Partagás or Hoyo de Monterrey, its consistent blend and high-quality construction make it a favorite among seasoned smokers.
The brand’s light profile, refined flavor, and deep roots in history continue to win praise around the world. Whether you’re exploring Cuban cigars for the first time or building your humidor, H. Upmann is an essential addition.
